Holstein Canada president
Holstein Canada’s board of directors has elected Brian Leach of Cobden, Ont., as president for 2008.
First elected to the board in 1999, Leach has served on numerous committees and was vice-president and board chair last year.
After graduating from Ontario’s University of Guelph in 1973, he joined his father, Russell, on the family’s five generation farm in the Ottawa Valley.
Leach’s goal is to continue his extensive work with animal health. He also said policies relating to all-breeds classification, retention of established members and enrolment of new, young members are fundamental to the breed’s healthy progress.
Elm pruning ban
The Saskatchewan government is urging residents to refrain from pruning elm trees between April 1 and Aug. 31.
Fresh cuts from pruning can attract the beetles that spread Dutch elm disease.
The annual pruning ban is in effect during the time of year when elm bark beetles are most active.
Pruning remains an important part of regular elm tree care and is encouraged before and after the annual ban.
Proper pruning helps keep trees healthy and better able to resist disease. The removal of dead and dying elm wood through pruning also helps reduce beetle breeding habitat and control the beetle population.
Prompt and proper disposal of the pruned wood is also essential.
