Agriculture in the Classroom programs need people willing to volunteer to teach children about farming.
“We’re always looking,” said Sara Shymko, executive director of the Saskatchewan Agriculture in the Classroom program.
Last year the group reached 10,000 students and 800 teachers through presentations, workshops and distribution of kits, pamphlets and fact sheets.
Besides giving presentations in classrooms, volunteers can assist in student activities or provide expert information to help in developing material for teachers.
Shymko said the main theme of the Saskatchewan program is agriculture’s sustainability. To volunteer, contact Shymko at 306-933-5224.
Alberta’s program is also looking for people to deliver one-hour talks to elementary schoolchildren. Last year the program reached 16,000 students.
In a news release, the Alberta program said in 2007 the average volunteer gave five to 10 hours of their time and did two presentations.
To volunteer for the Alberta program, contact Lindsey Metheral at 403-275-4400.
The Manitoba group was not available for a comment before deadline.
