“Happiness is not a matter of good fortune or worldly possessions. It’s a mental attitude. It comes from appreciating what we have, instead of being miserable about what we don’t have. It’s so simple – yet so hard for the human mind to comprehend.”

Dave Redekopp, author of Theories of Career Development, presents five key messages about adopting a positive attitude in life, jobs and a career search.
Change is constant
The state of change in technology, economics and social situations in the world directly affects work. Roles are changing and new roles are emerging all the time.
As well, personal change occurs continuously.
Embrace change as opportunity and welcome it instead of resisting it. People grow and develop new knowledge, skills, attitudes, beliefs, friends and acquaintances.
Set your short- and long-term goals but also welcome diversions from the original path.
Follow your heart
Because change is constant, it is important that you know yourself because that will be your stabilizing anchor. This means knowing your values, beliefs and interests.
These heart-felt values should drive your career path.
Follow your dreams and cherish them no matter how unrealistic they may seem to others.
Focus on the journey
Career coaching is about helping people find meaningful and fulfilling work.
Too often people want to go from point A to point Z in a big hurry. We should emphasize the meaningfulness of the journey. Because change is constant and the original destination may change while en route, it is important to enjoy every decision and be certain they coincide with your values, beliefs and interests.
Keep learning
Learning must also be constant, especially when change is constant. Learn from everyday activities that provide new skills, contacts and assets.
You might cringe at the idea. It might have been years since formal school days and they might not have been pleasant, but give it another try.
It is amazing how differently you may approach learning when your heart and dreams are involved.
It may be easier than you think.
Be an ally, access your allies
This is all about the importance of friends and community.
Work and the dynamics of work are not isolated, but envelope us in everything we do and everywhere we go. It is about our society – parents, neighbours, friends, co-workers and fellow volunteers.
Our focus should be on interdependence rather than independence. Why wait until the holiday season to reconnect with friends and allies? This spirit should be practiced every day.
