New marketing manager

The Bison Producers of Alberta has hired Jack Zenert as its marketing project manager.

Zenert lives in Innisfail, Alta., and has a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan.

He owned and managed a 4,000 acre mixed farm from 1990 to 2006 and operated a 200 head cow-calf and backgrounding operation. He also served as president of the Saskatchewan Emu Association and acquired a certified financial planner designation in 2004.

He now works in marketing and e-commerce through his internet firm ZedBiz.com.

As marketing project manager, Zenert will implement a strategic marketing plan that the Diversified Livestock Fund of Alberta recently approved.

Beef school

Alberta Agriculture and Olds College will again offer the Canadian Beef School, a three-day course that helps beef producers learn about the quality, fabrication and marketing of beef.

The course covers all steps in the beef production process from farmgate to dinner plate, providing participants with experience in areas to which they normally wouldn’t be exposed.

The school is open to anyone with an interest in the Canadian beef industry. Lead instructor is Brad McLeod of Olds College in Olds, Alta.

WSGA president

Russel Pickett of Bassano, Alta., is the new president of the Western Stock Growers Association.

He was elected Feb.22 at the organization’s 111th annual meeting in Red Deer.

Other board members include past-president Daryl Carlson of Pincher Creek, Alta., first vice-president Karen Gordon of Hanna, Alta., and second vice-president Brian Edge of Cochrane, Alta.

IAF award

British Columbia’s Investment Agriculture Foundation has launched a new award as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

The IAF Award of Excellence for Innovation in Agriculture and Agri-Food recognizes an individual, organization or business that has made a creative and important contribution to B.C.’s agriculture industry in the last three years.

Judges from across B.C.’s agriculture sector will review the nominees and select a winner. The foundation will accept nominations this fall and the first recipient will be named in early 2008.

Water stewardship chair

Gordon Goldsborough has been named chair of the Lake Manitoba Water Stewardship Board.

In addition to dealing with water quality and fisheries issues, the board will assist the Manitoba government in implementing the recommendations of the Lake Manitoba Regulation Review Advisory Committee.
