New potato fungicide

FMC Corporation will market Ranman fungicide in Canada in 2007.

The product is approved to control late blight on potatoes in Canada. The label may be expanded to mirror many uses in the United States.

Unlike fungicides that only control some disease stages, Ranman is active in all stages of the disease life cycle. It provides protection against diseases caused by oomycetes, especially infection by pathogens of the genera of phytophthora, pythium, pseudoperonospora and plasmopara.

The product is a contact fungicide and is the only fungicide on the market from the Group 21 cyanoimidazoles. The active ingredient, cyazofamid, inhibits mitochondrial respiration at the cytochrome bc 1 site.

The company claims that it has low water solubility, low soil mobility, is non-volatile and offers excellent rain fastness.

While Ranman is not systemic, it does provide some translaminar movement through the plant tissue.
