Monsanto scholarships

Fifty-five Canadian high school students will receive $1,500 scholarships from Monsanto Canada to be used to pay tuition in their first year of post-secondary education in agricultural or forestry studies.

The scholarships were distributed through Monsanto’s 2006 Opportunity Scholarship Program.

Winning students were selected by an independent panel of judges and demonstrated outstanding academic excellence, leadership capabilities and a strong involvement in their communities.

Alberta winners are:

Agriculture scholarship

Alberta Agriculture is looking for applicants for its agripreneur scholarship program.

The scholarships help as many as 20 farm direct marketers and ag tourism operators a year attend national and international educational conferences, tours and workshops.

Sixteen scholarships have been awarded in the first two years of the program to help entrepreneurs attend conferences in Canada and the United States.

The program is designed for farm direct marketers, ag tourism operators, farmers’ market managers and executive staff of appropriate industry associations.

Wine industry promotion

The B.C. Wine Institute will receive a $50,000 grant from the British

Columbia government to develop a business plan for a new B.C. Wine and Culinary Centre.

The centre will be built in Vancouver and is expected to open in 2009.

It is intended to help B.C. residents and visitors learn more about the province’s food and wine industry.
