Monsanto appointments

Monsanto Canada has announced several new appointments in its Western Trait and Seed business.

Norm Sissons will take over as western trait and seed commercial lead. In this role, he will focus on sales, marketing, licensing, technology development and crop teams within Monsanto’s Canadian canola business. He will also assume a position on Monsanto’s Canadian leadership team, comprising key personnel responsible for each of Monsanto’s core businesses.

Sissons replaces Sean Gardner, who was recently appointed vice-president and general manager of Monsanto’s Canadian business.

Other recent appointments will see Todd Younghans take over as licensing business manager, replacing Rob Nixon who moved to the United States to work for Delta and Pine Land.

Neil Arbuckle has been appointed business manager of Dekalb for Western Canada.

He will be responsible for managing Monsanto’s branded seed business, which markets certified canola, corn and soybean seed to growers under the Dekalb brand name. Arbuckle has held a number of roles of increasing responsibility at Agricore United including seed sales supervisor, area sales manager, distribution manager and manager of AU’s Proven Seed business.

Pulse awards

Saskatchewan Pulse Growers is accepting nominations for the Pulse Promoter Award.

The award is presented annually to a person who has made a substantial contribution to the development of the pulse industry. Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 1.

The award will be presented during Pulse Days in January 2007.

AGC appointments

Alberta agriculture minister Doug Horner has appointed four new members to the Alberta Grain Commission.

Henry Dechant farms in the Fairview area. He grows wheat, canola, bromeseed and fescue, and practises direct seeding and other conservation farming methods. He has been involved with the local applied research organization for the past 10 years.

Daniel Greene grows cereals and pulses near Carmangay. He served as the marketing director of Diversified Foods Inc. from 1998 until 2004, a position in which he was responsible for marketing grain to domestic and international markets.

John Brown is responsible for crop products and rural growth at the department. In previous roles, he served as branch head of the department’s Crop Diversification Centre North, the Agri-Food Laboratories Branch and the Soil and Crop Diagnostic Centre.

Ron Popek has worked for Alberta Agriculture for more than 26 years in business analysis, value-added industry development and rural development.

He is the director of Rural Investments and is responsible for infrastructure programming and other initiatives that support the Rural Development Strategy.
