The Federated Women’s Institutes of Canada meets every three years. The 2006 theme is “valuing our identity while adapting to change.”

Speakers will include former Chatelaine magazine editor Rona Maynard and singer/actor Tom Jackson.

About 300 delegates are expected to also hear about rural women’s health, family violence and the FWIC northern aid project and will also tour rural Alberta.

The four provincial WIs in Western Canada will hold their annual meetings before the national conference begins.

The British Columbia WI will meet for one day April 29 in Kamloops, the site of its new office.

Among the resolutions under discussion, said president Elsie Karl, is a constitutional change to allow all BCWI branches to be legally licensed to sell raffle tickets. The provincial government regulates this common fundraiser.

Another resolution asks the province to protect fresh water by not allowing sewage to be dumped into it, whether treated or untreated.

Delegates will consider asking for research into the cause of BSE and requesting that all Canadian slaughter cattle be tested for BSE.

Resolutions are also on the Manitoba WI agenda for its April 27-28 annual convention in Russell, Man.:

  • The federal regulator eliminate swearing on TV.
  • Bursaries, tax credits and other incentives be offered to encourage health-care students to locate in rural Manitoba.
  • 911 emergency services be interconnected across Canada.
  • A national highway system be maintained for better traffic safety.
  • The provincial government pay for insulin pumps prescribed by doctors.

The Saskatchewan Women’s Institute will meet June 2-4 on Lake Diefenbaker near Birsay, Sask. Under the theme “telling our stories,” the group will hear about a Chinese adoption, hobbies involving creative and column writing, making miniatures, a barley products business and a facility that works with people who have eating disorders.

The Alberta Women’s Institutes will hold a short annual meeting June 14 in Red Deer. This will allow for more time for the national convention, which AWI members are organizing.
