Swine efforts rewarded
The Manitoba Pork Council presented its swine stewardship awards to individuals and organizations whose efforts contributed to the sustainable growth and prosperity of the province’s pork industry.
The awards were presented at the council’s annual general meeting banquet on April 4.
The swine steward award went to Foster Farms Ltd., for its long-standing and continuing commitment to agriculture and Manitoba’s hog industry.
The community relations award went to Cathy Vanstone and Diane Mauthe, volunteers whose vision brought farm safety day camps to Manitoba.

The education award went to Agriculture in the Classroom-Manitoba for its innovative leadership in educating Manitoba schoolchildren.
The environmental award went to Samson Engineering Inc. of Brandon for the development of a farm-scale anaerobic digestion system.
Co-op awards
The Manitoba Co-operative Association is inviting nominations for the co-operative awards program to honour individuals and organizations in Manitoba that have made an outstanding contribution to co-ops and credit unions.Ê
Award categories include distinguished co-operator, co-operative merit and co-operative achievement. New this year is the youth leadership award, which recognizes significant contributions by young people, aged 30 and younger, in co-operative endeavours.
The award may also recognize the commitment and achievements of individuals or organizations in mentoring youth and supporting their successes as young co-operative leaders.
An independent committee representing the various systems within the co-op sector will select the award recipients.
A banquet will be held Oct. 16 to honour award recipients and kick off national Co-op Week celebrations in Manitoba.
