Simmental breeders

The Canadian Simmental Association is urging members to enter its Proud to be a Simmental Breeder program.

Entries require a one-page letter describing how the entrant’s breeding program, marketing and promotional materials and programs promote the breed. Entries must include photos of the members and their operation and samples of promotional materials.

The three award recipients will be notified on May 22.

A panel of agricultural industry professionals will evaluate entries based on demonstration of commitment, support and advancement of the Simmental breed.

The top three program entries will be featured in Simmental Country and receive a free registration package for two, valued at $3,000, to the World Simmental Congress in Calgary on July 12-16, where they will be honoured with an award.

Entry deadline is May 2. Entries can be mailed to the Canadian Simmental Association, 13, 4101 19 Street NE, Calgary, T2E 7C4 or faxed to 403-250-5121. E-mailed entries can be sent to cansim@simmental.com.

Management award

Philom Bios Inc. has been named one of Canada’s best managed companies in 2005 by Deloitte, CIBC Commercial Banking, the National Post and Queen’s School of Business.

The company recently opened a new 105,000 sq. foot lab, office and manufacturing facility in Saskatoon and has delivered average revenue growth of 18 percent over the past five years.

In 2005, Philom Bios recorded 19 percent revenue growth and had record operating earnings.

Established in 1993, the best managed companies award is a national program recognizing Canadian companies that have implemented world-class business practices and created value in innovative ways.

Applications are reviewed by a judging panel that evaluates how companies address various business challenges, including new technologies, globalization, brand management, leadership, leveraging and developing core competencies, designing information systems and hiring the right talent to facilitate growth.
