New herbicide registered

Axial, a new cereal grass herbicide developed by Syngenta, recently received registration in Canada and will be available in limited quantities for the 2006 growing season. It’s registered on spring wheat and barley.

Axial is registered to control a variety of grassy weeds, including wild oats, green and yellow foxtail, volunteer canaryseed, volunteer oats and proso millet. It can be applied to weeds from the one-leaf up to the six-leaf stage before the emergence of the fourth tiller and can be applied to both spring wheat and barley up to the emergence of the flag leaf.

VIDEO: Green Lightning and Nytro Ag win sustainability innovation award

Nytro Ag Corp and Green Lightning recieved an innovation award at Ag in Motion 2025 for the Green Lightning Nitrogen Machine, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into a plant-usable form.

Axial has no carryover concerns with rotational crops seeded in the following growing season. It can be tank mixed with many broadleaf herbicides without compromising grass control.

Axial represents a new chemical class of grass herbicides. The active ingredient, pinoxaden, is the first of a new chemical class within Group 1 herbicides.

Manure spreader hydraulics

A new hydraulic kit for Leon Silver manure spreaders prevents the push gate and end gate beater from bowing, bending or getting out of alignment.

The kit initiates two sequences. The first ensures the end-gate is fully open before the push-gate engages and ejects the load. The second ensures the push-gate is clear of the end-gate before the end-gate engages and closes.

The spreader’s hydraulic system can eject up to 4.4 tonnes of manure per minute. This creates a solid pressure that could cause damage if the end-gate has not been opened.

“First time operators particularly have a tendency to forget to open the end-gate,” said John Malinowski, vice-president of sales and marketing for Leons Manufacturing in Yorkton.

“Sometimes experienced operators overlook opening the end-gate. This new automatic hydraulic end-gate opener option will prevent accidents from happening.”

New ATV models

John Deere recently announced five Buck all-terrain vehicles for 2006.

There are two 500 cc models and three with 650 cc engines. Four of the five machines feature continuously variable transmissions.

The Buck 500 uses a 498 cc in-line Rotax engine, gear-on-gear five-speed transmission, step-through design, double A-Arm front suspension and rigid swing-arm rear suspension.

The continuously variable Buck Auto models come with either a 498 cc or a 644 cc 4-Tec Rotax engine, semi-step-through design and the same double A-Arm front and rigid swing-arm rear suspensions.

The ATVs include a progressively locking four-wheel drive system that automatically delivers the correct amount of traction without compromising steering or maneuverability, a rear radiator that reduces risk of impaction from mud or debris and a water-tight eight-gallon front storage area.
