Environmental website
The Centennial Environmental Champions project, an initiative of the Saskatchewan Eco-Network, has launched a new website.
The site, located at www.econet.sk.ca/sk_enviro_champions/, features examples of Saskatchewan individuals and organizations who have been leaders and innovators in environmental protection.
It will be promoted through schools and libraries and includes profiles on environmental champions such as Anahereo, Grey Owl, Stuart and Mary Houston, Grant MacEwan, John Macoun, W.O. Mitchell, Farley Mowat, J. Stan Rowe, Wallace Stegner and Diana Wright.

Organizations featured on the site include the Indian Head Shelterbelt Centre, Last Mountain Lake Bird Sanctuary, Nature Saskatchewan, the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration and Saskatchewan Soil Survey.
The Centennial Environmental Champions project is also seeking nominations for new individuals and organizations worthy of recognition for environmental stewardship. The deadline for nominations has been extended until Nov. 11. Nomination criteria are also on the site.
Top potato growers
Tamminga Farms Ltd. of Cranford, Alta., has been named McCain Foods’ champion potato grower for Alberta.
Tamminga Farms, owned and operated by Bill Tamminga, has been contracting potatoes with McCain for five years and has made the company’s top 10 potato growers list on two occasions. The top grower title is based on the size, defect level and colour of each load delivered.
Other top 10 growers this year included Courtland Hills Farms of Bow Valley, Alta., Tri-T Farms of Vauxhall, Alta., Grand Forks Farms of Vauxhall, S-Scan Farms of Vauxhall, Marty Johnson and Larry Van Orman of Taber, Alta., SLM Spud Farms of Taber, Prairieview Seed Potatoes of Vauxhall and Glasco Farms of Purple Springs, Alta. Chin Coulee Farms of Coaldale, Alta., John Cailliau Farms of Enchant, Alta., and Lievaart Farms of Coaldale tied for 10th place on the list.
Wildlife conservation
The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation has launched a new wildlife habitat conservation program to recognize and reward landowners who conserve natural landscapes on their properties.
The program encourages landowners to sign a formal conservation easement agreement that protects bush, wetlands and grasslands. Activities such as grazing, haying, firewood removal and fencing can be accommodated in the easements.
