Mobile barbecue

Alberta Pork has a mobile outdoor barbecue and kitchen that can be booked free-of-charge to travel to Alberta communities to raise money for charities or community projects.

Since its inception in 2002, the mobile barbecue has been involved in more than 50 events in Alberta, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to local charities.

The barbecue is a fully contained commercial-scale kitchen on wheels, designed to feed groups of 50 to 500 people. Alberta Pork supplies staff to operate the cruiser and donates the pork that is served.

All proceeds from pork food sales at the event are then donated to a charitable cause designated by the event organizers.

The barbecue, also known as the special events cruiser, is offered as part of Alberta Pork’s community ambassador program.

Community organizations can apply to have the Alberta Pork special events cruiser attend events between May and September.

To apply, contact Alberta Pork at 403-256-2764, ext. 221, or fill out an application form on Alberta Pork’s website at www.albertapork.ca.

Go to Put Pork on Your Fork and click on Ambassador Program.

The first business planning competition in Canada targeted at rural communities was launched in southern Alberta in April.

The Chinook Entrepreneur Challenge offers individuals, new and existing businesses and post-secondary students the chance to win prizes for developing a business plan in a general or agricultural-based business.

Targeted at new, small and medium enterprises, the challenge will focus on business and management education, mentorship and networking among participants and other businesspeople in the southern region.

Participants have the opportunity to attend various business seminars throughout the challenge and will present their ideas to a panel of judges for the chance to win more than $30,000 worth of prizes.

To register or to receive more information, visit www.chinookchallenge.com.

The deadline for registration is May 19. Business plans must be submitted by Sept. 2.
