A booklet that strives to connect consumers with Manitoba’s organic
food producers arrived on the shelves of organic and health food stores
this winter.
The 40-page Down to Earth: Guide to Organic Food in Manitoba costs $4
and provides the names and locations of organic growers throughout the
province. It also lists restaurants that use organic produce.
But it is more than a telephone directory.
It carries a collection of information and opinions about some of the

issues and trends influencing organic production.
It challenges consumers to think about the differences between organic
farming and conventional farming, with an emphasis on environmental and
food safety issues.
The booklet was published by the Organic Food Council of Manitoba and
edited by David Neufeld, an organic grower from Boissevain, Man.
He said he wanted to produce a booklet that was informative and newsy,
so that consumers could gain more than a “fringe understanding” of
organic production.
He hopes sales will cover the costs of production, so that an updated
booklet can be published annually.
“I think organics is coming of age and I think people are willing to
pay for information about it.”
