Our paper holds special memories for some of our readers, such as those of Wanda and Les Penner, of Archerwill, Sask.

Wanda wrote to let us know she enjoyed our newspaper: “You see, I met my husband as a pen pal through your Western Producer.” Last month, they celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary.

Wanda shared a bit of information about their son and three daughters: who is talented in artwork, who is married, where they live, the expectation of a grandchild.

“If it sounds like I am proud of our children, well I am.

Late season rainfall creates concern about Prairie crop quality

Praying for rain is being replaced with the hope that rain can stop for harvest. Rainfall in July and early August has been much greater than normal.

“If it hadn’t been for your Western Producer, I wouldn’t have met my husband Les and we surely wouldn’t have had the children we have,” Wanda wrote.

We still continue to run a ‘pen pals wanted’ feature in the newspaper for our younger readers. However, the request for correspondence has dwindled, and the feature now runs about once every two months.

We are discontinuing the column Car Talk in our newspaper as of this week.

The column’s author, Robert Appel, had his first column printed in our Farm Living pages on Nov. 15, 1990.

In the past four years, he has written on a wide range of topics, including how to reduce gas mileage, storing cars in winter, finding a good mechanic, buying a vehicle over the border, recycling old radiator fluid, buying tires, trading in your car, and what to do about rust on your car.

It was felt that the different columns offered by Appel and before him, by Phil Edmonston, have covered most of the topics of interest our readers have in the area of vehicles.

In the upcoming weeks, we look forward to introducing a new columnist.
