SASKATOON – Fed cattle prices see-sawed last week, but the overall average increased about $1 per hundredweight. That increase was especially heartening considering weekly volumes were up by more than 60 percent, at just over 17,000, with an unheard-of 10,000 heifers in the mix.
Most of the buying action was from local plants.
Prices on Feb. 16 had steers bid between $92.70 and $95.65, while heifers were at $91.25 to $95.50. Lower quality heifers were priced as low as $88.
Lamb prices
Canada West Foods in Innisfail, Alta., reports the following lamb prices: $1.85-$1.88 on the rail for carcasses weighing 44-53 lb., $1.82-$1.85 for 54-50 lb. carcasses and $1.82-$1.83 for 60-64 lb. carcasses. Market lambs weighing 115-125 lb. were priced at $0.84 to $0.87 liveweight.
