Slaughter cattle up
SASKATOON (Staff) – Slaughter cattle prices in Alberta were up by $2 per hundredweight last week. Canfax reported the gain in prices was a result of the dropping Canadian dollar, as U.S. markets in the Southern Plains were steady .
Volume traded picked up significantly to 14,000 head, the largest week since late November. Trade on Jan. 12 saw steers bid between $92.45-$94.85 with heifers at $93.85-$94.50.
Canfax reports D1 and D2 cows trading to $62 while Alberta railgrade bids are at $105-$112.
Feeder cattle prices also reaped the benefits of a lower dollar and much stronger sales at 13,000 head.
Other livestock
The Index 100 pool price for Saskatchewan hogs was up by $6.70 per ckg; the Alberta price was up $2.10 and Manitoba was up by $6.
In Saskatchewan, slaughter lambs were at 94 cents per lb., feeder lambs 96 cents, slaughter sheep at 42 cents and goats at 72 cents.
