STRATHMORE, Alta. Ñ A decision to place 20 yearling bulls on test paid off for Highland Stock Farms of Calgary, which won an award of $25,000 from Cattleland Feedyards at Strathmore.
The Cattleland battle of the bulls contest allowed the public to judge different breeds of bulls and vote for their favourites.
“People picked what they thought was the best in all the breeds,” said Scott McKinnon of Cattleland.
The top five bulls, representing the Charolais, Simmental, Limousin and Black and Red Angus breeds, were scrutinized by three judges with their final selection being a black Limousin yearling.
The winner owned by Rob and Tim Matthews of Highland Stock Farms will be sold at the Cattleland Bull Test All Breed bull auction on March 26. About 100 performance-tested bulls will be offered, plus another 50 tested for net feed efficiency and some replacement heifers.
The Cattleland bull test station is the largest of its kind in Canada, measuring overall performance of young purebred bulls destined for commercial cattle operations.
