WINNIPEG (Staff) – The Manitoba Canola Growers’ Association hopes to collect between $250,000 and $500,000 through a checkoff.

Bruce Dalgarno, president of the organization, said growers will pay 50 cents per tonne of canola at the point of sale as early as this spring.

Most of the money will go toward research and canola production centres, he said.

Dalgarno said Manitoba has fallen somewhat behind Saskatchewan and Alberta. Growers there have been contributing to research through checkoffs since 1989.

Elevators and other buyers will automatically collect the checkoff. Growers who don’t want to contribute will be able to request refunds twice a year.
