Cookbook from 1950s reprinted to mark 100th

The recipes are all at least 50 years old but the promoters of an old cookbook are hoping it can work its magic again.

A cookbook published in 1955 for Saskatchewan’s golden jubilee is being reprinted for the province’s 100th birthday next year.

From Saskatchewan Homemakers’ Kitchens was put together by the Saskatchewan Women’s Institutes.

“SWI owns copyright to the book,” said SWI president Virginia Kreklevich. “Earlier this year, we were approached by the Western Development Museum in Moose Jaw and asked if we would allow the WDM to reprint the book as a museum fundraiser, in which SWI will share.

“It seems like a great idea to us. SWI just isn’t big enough anymore to take the project on by ourselves.”

Kathy Fitton, manager of the Moose Jaw museum, said the idea of reprinting the cookbook came from a couple of staff members who had copies. She said the book has both nostalgia value and 325 recipes that are useful. She noted that people tend to buy cookbooks at the museum’s gift shop so that it would probably make money.

Fitton said they hope to be selling the cookbooks by Christmas. Part of the book’s charm, she said, is that the recipes were handwritten with drawings done by WI members.

Kreklevitch said that some people may want to buy the book because their mothers or grandmothers had a hand in creating it.
