By turning pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, some creative persons will win in two writing contests offered this fall.

Grade 12 students in Saskatchewan can enter an essay writing contest that will provide a $1,000 scholarship next year. Now in its eighth year, the contest is sponsored by the Institute of Agricultural Rural and Environmental Health at the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities.

Students are to write 1,000 words about safety on their farm. Application forms are available at local RM offices, provincial Rural Service Centres or the institute at 306-966-6643.

In the other contest, women living in central Alberta between the cities of Calgary and Edmonton, can write a truthful, non-fiction account of an incident in their lives for a “step in my shoes” story contest. Winning essays will be printed in a local newspaper during October, women’s history month.

Deadline for submissions is Sept. 19. Stories should be sent to the Red Deer and District Museum. For more information, call 403-309-8405.
