A Black Angus cross calf is being fed by a 4-H member in the Prince Albert, Sask., area in hopes that will raise at least $3,000 for charity.
The steer will be sold June 4 at the Northeast 4-H regional show in Prince Albert for $3 to $4 a pound, said Tim Oleksyn, director of the 4-H beef program for the local fair.
Proceeds from the sale of the calf, named Charity 2001, will go to the Saskatchewan branch of the Canadian Liver Foundation.
Oleksyn said the 140 kids in seven 4-H clubs in the Nipawin-Choiceland-Prince Albert region agreed to buy the calf in October, raise it using feed donated from Heartland and sell it with proceeds going to a charity of their choice. The charity was picked from a hat holding each club’s suggestion.

Oleksyn said it’s a good news story for agriculture. It is the first time this has been done in a Sask-atchewan 4-H club and he hopes it continues next year and spreads to other regions. The idea came from a similar charity calf sale in a Calgary area club.
Oleksyn said the business that buys Charity 2001 will get an original drawing of the calf done by artists Glen Scrimshaw and his daughter.
