Round balers

Case has introduced a new generation of round balers. Called the Round Simplified series, there are three sizes.

The easy maintenance design places all drives and tension arms on the left side of the baler and on the right, storage for up to eight twine balls.

The RS451 baler pickup is about two metres (77 inches) end-to-end while the RS551 and RS561 pickups are 2.3 metres (92 inches) wide.

They have an aggressive starter roll with patented flaps designed to immediately start turning the hay fed by the stuffer to form the bale. The two larger machines have standard bale shape sensors riding on the belts that contact the top front of the bale as it is formed. The monitor uses arrows to indicate when to drive to the other side of the windrow to ensure a properly shaped bale.

Drive option

Gehl has introduced a two-speed drive option for its two largest skid loaders, the models 5635 and 6635.

The two-speed option allows standard working speeds from zero to 13 km-h and a traveling speed of 20 km-h.

The 5635 is available with either 60 h.p. or 80 h.p., turbo-charged, oil-cooled diesel engine and has an SAE operating capacity of 1,800 pounds.

The 6635 has the 80 h.p. engine and a 2,300 lb. operating capacity.

Optional counterweights raise the capacities to 2,100 lb. on the 5635 and 2,600 lb. on the 6635.

Hog pricing software

A computer program to help hog producers make forward price decisions has been released.

Developed by SPI Marketing Group and Saskatchewan Pork Central, the package includes the Saskatchewan Hog Pricing Program and a manual called Profit Management in the Hog Industry.

The manual has an introduction to the futures and options markets, covering such issues as basis and hedging techniques, price forecasting and methods to choose a broker.

The computer program helps producers choose forward pricing options for farrow-to-finish and feeder-to-finish operations.

To run the program, producers need Windows 95 or Windows NT with a minimum of 16 megabytes of RAM and at least 30 megabytes of hard drive space.

Soil sampler

Case has introduced an automated soil sampling system for use with its global positioning system technology and Agri-logic software.

There are two models, a pickup mounted, electric-powered unit designed to fold down when not in use and a hydraulic unit that uses a heavy duty A-frame to mount to a three-point tractor hitch.

Both models can take a 61 centimetre (24-inch) sample in 12 seconds. The operator uses a hand-held remote control switch to control the probe.

The unit can be used in conjunction with a GPS system to plot the location of each sample. When used with Case’s Agri-logic computer programs, the data can be co-ordinated with yield maps and variable rate application systems.
