Swather clearance

Massey Ferguson’s model 220 swather has table or header openings up to 1.8 metres (70 inches) wide and a one metre (40 inch) under frame ground clearance, allowing swathing of cereals and canola with draper headers up to nine m (30 feet) in width.

A header flotation and lift system allows headers up to nine m wide to follow ground contours. The header lift linkage floats up and down and allows headers to tilt from side-to-side to keep the cutter bar at a consistent height on uneven ground. Draper headers with swath openings adjustable from 1.4-1.8 m produce optimum swaths in both light and heavy crops.

Canvas inserts can reduce the opening if necessary. The cutterbar knife is driven hydraulically through an epicyclic gear crank rather than a wobble box, eliminating belts, chains and pulleys. A rear hood tips up and slides back for access to hydraulics, cooling, drive train and engine components.

An 88 horsepower, four-cylinder direct injection diesel engine powers the swather.

Flotation system

The Caterpillar Versatile Flotation system uses Cat’s proven Mobil-Trac undercarriage to solve hauling and spreading problems. The belted undercarriage distributes the load over a ground contact area nine times larger than the typical wheel trailer so that flotation improves in soft underfoot conditions and compaction decreases.

Two models allow the undercarriage to match load requirements. When equipped with a hitch and frame, the VFS50 handles loads up to 18,500 kilograms and the VFS70 supports as much as 27,300 kg. Both models offer an optional hitch and frame to accommodate truck-mounted equipment. Using the undercarriage alone allows bolting on a cart, wagon or other equipment. The top equipment can be swapped to match the season and operation.

Uses include spreading lime, injecting anhydrous ammonia, hauling sludge, spraying herbicides, transporting grain and feed, using side-dump carts and moving any load over soft ground where rutting or compactions is a concern.

The VFS has six axles per side to spread weight over a long narrow footprint. The design allows 17-degree oscillation so that each belt can independently negotiate obstructions and rough terrain. A variety of belt widths are available.
