New corn silage inoculant
Sila-bac 1132 corn silage inoculant, made by Pioneer Hi-Bred Ltd., has been granted permanent registration by Agriculture Canada. The inoculant has been available in the U.S. for a year. Pioneer said its benefits include faster fermentation, less spoilage and longer bunklife.
The 1132 has been granted two official claims of performance by Ag Canada: It improves feed efficiency (from research on corn silage at 60-70 percent moisture, fed to beef cattle) and increases milk production (from research on corn silage at 65-75 percent moisture, fed to dairy cows.) Steve Soderlund, an animal nutritionist with the company, said: “Through Pioneer and university research, we’ve found that beef producers can expect as much as 18 more pounds of beef gain per tonne of corn silage fed, and dairy producers can expect as much as 180 more pounds of milk per tonne of corn silage fed.”

Farm-tough mower
Bush Hog’s new zero-turn mower was developed using lessons learned from building farm machinery. The zero-turn mower delivers superior performance through a shorter design (25-30 centimetres) than other models for better manoeuvring around trees and obstacles.
There is a minimum seven cm distance between tractor and deck for complete cut in tight “Z” manoeuvres, low centre of gravity for stable hillside operation, low profile for better traction and easier mowing under shrubs and trees.
The mower has 18 and 22 horsepower Kohler Command engines, side-to-side and front-to-rear deck flotation and dual hydro-transaxle direct drive. Control levers which maintain speed, braking and direction are located beside the operator, which eliminates shifting gears and pushing pedals. The zero-turn mower is available in 1.2 and 1.5 metre cutting widths and adjustable cutting heights of 2.5-12.5 cm. Maintenance is assisted by a 90-degree deck tilt.
