Roundup Dry
Monsanto Canada Inc. is going to be a selling a dry, water-soluble formulation of Roundup this spring. Packaged in cardboard boxes, the dry formulation eliminates triple-rinsing and disposing of plastic jugs. One box of Roundup Dry plus a surfactant will treat the same number of acres as two 10-litre jugs of liquid Roundup.

New canola
An experimental variety of canola, called AU443, has been unanimously supported for registration by the western canola and rapeseed recommending committee.

Proven Seed, the seed arm of the United Grain Growers, will be formally applying for registration with Agriculture Canada and the experimental variety will be renamed and sold as Bullet. Registration is expected in April.
The canola is a high-yielding, early-maturing Argentine variety that is of medium height, has good lodging resistance and is moderately resistant to blackleg (the best rating available).
In three years of Agriculture Canada’s co-operative testing, AU443 showed maturity similar to Westar, yield similar to Delta, oil content similar to Westar and green seed content similar to Profit. UGG has applied for protection of the variety under the Plant Breeders Rights Act of Canada.

New form for Provide
DowElanco Canada Inc. has introduced Provide LSC (liquid spore concentrate), a new formulation which makes Provide quicker and easier to mix and apply and enhances the viability of the penicillium bilaii fungi in Provide. The liquid formulation was used by certified seed processors to inoculate canola in 1993 and will replace the dry formulation of Provide. Farmers will be able to use their old applicators for the new formulation.
