Crop adviser award
Manitoba Agriculture ag rep Ingrid Kristjanson has won the 2004 Prairie Provinces Certified Crop Adviser of the Year award.
Kristjanson, who specializes in soil testing and increasing awareness and interpretation of lab analysis, has been a certified crop adviser since 1997. She worked as an agronomist for Simplot and Cargill before becoming an ag rep in Morris, Man., in 2002.
The CCA program is a professional certification for those who work in crop production, fertilizer, soil conservation and pest management. It is administered by provincial, state and regional boards. There are more than 1,200 CCAs in Canada and more than 14,000 in North America.

Oat growers officials
Winnipeg oat producer Al Loyns has been elected to his second term as president of the Prairie Oat Growers Association.
Willie Zuchkan of Foam Lake, Sask., is the association’s vice-president and Bill Wilton of Winnipeg is chair and Manitoba vice-president. Michael Spilchuk of Ituna, Sask., was returned as Saskatchewan vice-president, while the Alberta vice-president position will remain open pending the next directors’ meeting.
New board members include Richard Pedde of Indian Head, Sask., and Tyson Becker of Yorkton, Sask. Returning board members includes Jack Shymko of Ituna, Sask., Lorne Floyd of Arborg, Man., Lorne Kyle of Oak Bank, Man., as well as Zuchkan, Loyns, Spilchuk and Wilton. Greg Downie of Wawanesa, Man., and Robert Anderson of Dugald, Man., were reappointed interim directors for Manitoba and Robert Elmy of Saltcoats, Sask., was reappointed interim director for Saskatchewan.
Animal council directors
The Farm Animal Council of Saskatchewan Inc. has announced its new board of directors.
Members include: Stewart Stone of Heartland Livestock Services, chair; Shannon Meyers of Sask Pork, vice-chair; Mark Silzer of the Saskatchewan Bison Association; Royce Reiss of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association; Alvin Schultz of Dairy Farmers of Saskatchewan; Tim Wiens of O & T Farms Ltd.; Louise Greenberg of Saskatchewan Agriculture; Jim Teichrob of Saskatchewan Egg Producers; Jeff Stevenson of the Saskatchewan Cattle Feeders Association; Murray Woodbury representing diversified livestock; Sandra Stephens of the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association; Trish Dowling of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and inspector Brenda Lucki of the RCMP, adviser.
The council represents the industry in advancing responsible livestock welfare, care and handling practices.
College gets oncologist
Monique Mayer has joined the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon as Canada’s only veterinary radiation oncologist.
Originally from Vancouver, she graduated from the WCVM in 1995 and recently completed her master of science in radiological health sciences and a two-year radiation oncology residency at Colorado State University. She became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology this past September.
