SASKATOON — The Saskatchewan Women’s Institute is planning workshops that will make families safer, and therefore happier.

The workshops entitled “The Community Safety Kit” will encourage participants to think about how safe their communities are, what resources are available and what services could be developed.

“We want these workshops to encourage women to ask questions and inform themselves on violence and abuse against women and families,” said Alison Wilson, provincial president.

Wilson, from Glenbain, said rural women face different problems because they are isolated and transportation may be taken away from them.

The provincial WI board is promoting the workshops and helping prepare educational kits. The program will coincide with the International Year of the Family.

Wilson is hoping the workshops can be organized in a number of areas of the province early this spring.

Elizabeth Rushton, president of the Alberta WI, said the family will be highlighted by local branches with picnics, get-togethers and family gatherings. It’s the Alberta’s group’s 85th anniversary.

Arlene Strugmell, executive-director of the national group, said British Columbia’s WI branches will be working on grassroots activities with an emphasis on issues of local concern.

In Manitoba, the WI’s annual conference in April will have as its theme “Tradition and Transition”, discussing the ever-changing role of family, society and organizations, Strugmell said.
