SASKATOON (Staff) – Prices were up but numbers were down at the 48th annual Tompkins, Sask., sheep sale held in October.
The sale sold 5,170 lambs, ewes, rams and goats for a gross of approximately $475,000.
Mel Jacques, manager of Tompkins Auction Mart Ltd., said that’s down about 2,000 head from the October 1994 sale.
However, prices were better than last year. Lambs averaged $88 per head, about $10 better than last year while ewe prices were up by $10-$15 per head.
High-selling ram was a yearling Suffolk consigned by Fred Brettell of Lloydminster, Sask., which sold for $380.
The Twilight Colony of Falher, Alta., won the pen of 10 competition with its entry of Suffolk ewe lambs; Dale Montgomery of Maple Creek, Sask., was second with his East Friesian lambs and Dwayne Morvik of Eastend, Sask., was third with his Columbia entry.
