Global Markets: Ragasa misses several major Chinese cities

  • As Super Typhoon Ragasa continued to make its way across southern China on Wednesday, the worst of its destruction missed a number of major cities in the region, including Hong Kong. However with wind speeds of more than 240 km/h plus heavy rains, Ragasa is the strongest typhoon of 2025. Earlier, it caused the deaths of 17 people in Taiwan.
  • The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development projected on Tuesday, for the Canadian economy to grow 1.1 per cent in 2025 and 1.2 per cent in 2026. The U.S. economy is to expand by 1.8 per cent and then 1.5 per cent.
  • Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said during a speech in Saskatoon on Tuesday that the federal government waited too long to diversify Canada’s international trade. Macklem warned the full effects of the Trump administration’s tariffs have yet to be felt economically.   
  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced two private sales on Wednesday. One for 312,956 tonnes of 2025/26 corn to Mexico and the other for 101,400 tonnes of 2025/26 soymeal to Guatemala.
