SASKATOON – The writing is on the wall at the University of Saskatchewan.
One hundred and fifty-three agrologists now have their names inscribed on a Wall of Honor located on the second floor of the university’s College of Agriculture. The wall is the initiative of the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists, honoring those who have made a major contribution to the agriculture and food industry.
The institute has presented awards to outstanding agrologists throughout the 50 years of the organization. It is these names that have been engraved on the wall, said SIA executive director Glen Hass.

“We’ve been presenting these awards, but nobody ever knows about them because we’ve had no place to publicly display them. So we said we should have these people on a wall,” Hass said at the Nov. 8 dedication ceremony.
Research scientists, organizational leaders and people active in technology are among those honored. Names include former premier Grant Devine and Ted Turner, a former president of Saskatchewan Wheat Pool.
John Stewart, dean of the College of Agriculture, said his college’s new building gave a place to recognize people who have contributed to agriculture.
“When we moved in here we were looking for a place to recognize people who had contributed to the profession that were teaching in this building. The best way to do that was to have an honor board in conjunction with the institute of agrologists,” he said.
Donald Rennie, a former dean of the college, is among the recognized people who have made contributions to the university.
More than 400 people attended the dedication and unveiling of a replica of the wall. Hass said the replica will be taken to Swift Current for each SIA annual meeting when that year’s recipients will have their names added. The replica will be in the SIA offices during the rest of the year.
