Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available Aug. 12 or Aug. 5.

U.S. hogs averaged $112.41 on a carcass basis Aug. 12, down from $113.52 Aug. 5.

Drought conditions in the Prairies has led to an decrease in water quality, and producers are being advised to closely monitor water quality for their animals.

The U.S. pork cutout was $114.70 per hundredweight Aug. 12, down from $118.86 Aug. 5.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Aug. 12 was 0.962 million. It was 0.907 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 0.968 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Aug. 9 Signature Four price was $261.57 per 100 kilograms, down from $262.71.

The Aug. 9 Hams Marketing cash price was $259.97, while on Aug. 2 it was $260.71. HyLife was $277.89 this week and $278.62 Aug. 2. OlyWest was $272.90, up from $271 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $277.20, from $276.50, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $277.89 this week, while on Aug. 2 it was $278.62.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $645-$700 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $620-$665 per cwt. for finished heifers. Mature bulls were $500-$550, while mature cows were $500-$550.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$485-$500 per cwt. for bulls and $450-$475 per cwt. for heifers.

Prices for mature bulls and cows were not available.

All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were C$5.02 per pound for bulls and $3.88 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. The mixed live animal price was $4.25.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 85 sheep and 283 lambs sold Aug. 4.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,555 sheep and 477 goats sold July 28.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $300-$385 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $285-$348, 70-85 lb. were $280-$338, 86-105 lb. were $280-$326, and 106 lb. and heavier were $270-$326. Wool rams were $175-$275 per cwt. Cull ewes were $190-$280.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $270-$335, 55-69 lb. were $270-$332, 70-85 lb. were $280-$315, 86-105 lb. were $270-$315 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$300. Hair rams were $170-$265 per cwt. Cull ewes were $180-$275.
