Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts for July 11 and July 4 was not available.

U.S. hogs averaged $106.69 on a carcass basis July 11, down from $110.21 July 4.

Hogs’ transport stress called costly

Poor trailer design and transportation stress are killing pigs and costing the pork industry millions of dollars in penalties, meat quality downgrades and failed welfare audits, according to research by a federal scientist.

The U.S. pork cutout was $113.47 per hundredweight July 11, up from $110.21 July 4.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to July 11 was 2.332 million. It was 1.823 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.340 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the July 12 Signature Four price was $253.58 per 100 kilograms, down from $260.60.

The July 12 Hams Marketing cash price was $251.58, while on July 5 it was $258.60. HyLife was $269.12 this week; it was $274.90 July 5. OlyWest was $266.20, down from $274.90 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was down, at $267.70, from $282.60, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $269.12 this week. On July 5 it was $274.90.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $635-$690 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls, $610-$650 per cwt. for finished heifers, $500-$550 per cwt. for mature bulls and $500-$550 per cwt. for mature cows.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$485-$500 per cwt. for bulls and $450-$475 per cwt. for heifers.

Prices for mature bulls and cows were not available.

All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were not available.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 187 sheep and 321 lambs sold July 7.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,528 sheep and 608 goats sold July 7.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $330-$400 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $325-$390, 70-85 lb. were $315-$385, 86-105 lb. were $300-$355, and 106 lb. and heavier were $290-$340. Wool rams were $140-$255 per cwt. Cull ewes were $140-$255.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $270-$350, 55-69 lb. were $270-$345, 70-85 lb. were $270-$325, 86-105 lb. were $260-$335 and 106 lb. and heavier were $260-$320. Hair rams were $145-$265 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$200.
