WINNIPEG (Staff) – The Canadian Wheat Board focused its forecast on wheat and coarse grain trade, comparing projections for the next 10 years to the period from the 1989-90 crop year to 1993-94.
Key predictions include:
- World wheat production of 625 million tonnes by 2005, compared to 559 million tonnes during the last five years.
- World wheat trade of 125 million tonnes by 2005, compared to 104 million tonnes in the base period.
- World durum trade to increase by 29 percent by 2005 from average levels of 4.8 million during the past five years. The CWB believes durum prices will likely maintain a “healthy premium” to spring wheat.
- World barley production of 186 million tonnes by 2005, compared to 169 million tonnes in the past five years.
- World barley trade to drop to 16.5 million tonnes by 2000 and then rise to 17.6 million tonnes by 2005 from its 18.5 million- tonne-average in the last five years.
