Global Markets: Global tech outage affects numerous industries

– Operations in multiple industries including airlines, banks and media outlets were disrupted by a global tech outage on Friday. Cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike took responsibility for the disruptions, citing a defect found in a content update for Microsoft Windows machines and servers causing operating systems to crash. Flights at United, American and Delta airlines were grounded. British news broadcaster Sky News was off air while the country’s National Health Service (NHS) had its appointment and patient record system affected. Crowdstrike said it has deployed a fix and some systems are back in operation.

– The Republican National Convention came to a close in Milwaukee on Thursday with former United States President Donald Trump accepting his party’s presidential nomination. Trump addressed the convention for 93 minutes about surviving the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on Saturday and stating he wants to be “president for all America”. Also, he expanded on mass deportation, accused Democrats of stealing the 2020 presidential election, and railed against rising crime and inflation despite figures indicating otherwise.

– Liberal MP Steve MacKinnon was announced as the new Labour and Seniors minister by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday morning. MacKinnon, an MP since 2015 for the Gatineau riding in Quebec, will replace Seamus O’Regan in the position after the latter resigned from cabinet on Thursday for family reasons. MacKinnon had been the interim government House leader and previously served as Deputy House leader and government whip.
