Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $66.70 May 24, down from $67.60 May 17.

U.S. hogs averaged $86.64 on a carcass basis May 24, down from $88.57 May 17.

Global pulse consumption to grow

Global per capita pulse consumption is expected to rise 23 per cent by 2034.

The U.S. pork cutout was $99.14 per hundredweight May 17, down from $100.85 May 17.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 24 was 2.363 million. It was 2.368 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.337 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the May 25 Signature Four price was $223.54 per 100 kilograms, up from $221.90.

The May 25 Hams Marketing cash price was $221.54, up from $219.90 May 18, while HyLife was $236.84 this week. The May 18 price was not available. OlyWest was $225.60, up from $224.50 last week.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $235.90, from $233.90, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $236.84 this week. On May 18 the price was not available.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices of $485-$510 per cwt., hot hanging weight, for finished bulls and $475-$510 cwt. for finished heifers. Mature bulls were $300-$400 cwt., while mature cows were $300-$400 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$410-$435 per cwt. for bulls and $380 to $405 per cwt. for heifers. Mature bulls were $313-$326 while mature cows were $300-$315 per cwt. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were $2.95 per pound for bulls and $2.50 per lb. for heifers of good quality or better. The mixed live animal price was $2.51 to $3.33 per pound.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 117 sheep and 346 lambs sold May 20.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 741 sheep and 249 goats sold May 13.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $225-$275 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $260-$325, 70-85 lb. were $275-$315, 86-105 lb. were $270-$335, and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$290. Wool rams were $130-$200 per cwt. Cull ewes were $130-$260.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $225-$275, 55-69 lb. were $250-$300, 70-85 lb. were $270-$305, 86-105 lb. were $250-$295 and 106 lb. and heavier were $250-$290. Hair rams were $155-$215 per cwt. Cull ewes were $160-$280.
