Canadian Financial Close: Strong finish for loonie

Glacier Farm Media MarketsFarm – The Canadian dollar cracked 73 U.S. cents on Thursday, finishing slightly above the mark due to a weaker United States dollar.

The loonie closed at US$0.7304 or US$1=C$1.3692, compared to Wednesday’s finish of US$0.7281 or US$1=C$1.3734. On the U.S. Dollar Index, the greenback dropped 0.346 of a point at 105.085.

Benchmark crude oil prices were modestly higher on Thursday, due to improved demand from China.

Brent crude oil rose 62 cents at US$84.20 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate was also up 62 cents at US$79.61.

The TSX Composite Index gained 116.67 points on Thursday, to close at 22,375.83.

Gold jumped US$25.30 at US$2,347.60 per ounce.
