Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts Jan. 12 was $35.09. It wasn’t available Jan. 5.

U.S. hogs averaged $44.96 on a carcass basis Jan. 12, up from $44.56 Jan. 5.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The U.S. pork cutout was $86.08 per hundredweight Jan. 12, up from $84.20 Jan. 5.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 12 was 2.130 million. It was 1.941 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.4 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 13 Signature Four price was $166.76 per 100 kilograms, up from $164.47.

The Jan. 13 Hams Marketing cash price was $164.76, up from $162.47 Jan. 6. HyLife was $177.56 this week, up from $174.76 Jan. 6. OlyWest was $157.40, up from $154.70.

OlyWest 2021 was up, at $184.20, from $180.70, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $193.78, up from $189.75 Jan. 6.

Bison

The Canadian Bison Association reported domestic carcass prices for finished bulls of $450-$525 per cwt., hot hanging weight. Finished heifers were $450-$510 cwt.. Mature bulls were $250-$300 cwt., while mature cows were $225-$250 cwt.

Carcass prices for bison sold into the United States were US$390-$415 per cwt. for bulls and $340-S$384 for heifers. Mature bulls were $313-$326 while mature cows were $301-$315 per cwt.. All prices are subject to fluctuations in the market and dollar exchange rates.

Prices for live bison in Canada were C$1.65-$2.70 per pound for bulls and $1.55-$2.05 per pound for heifers of good quality or better. Mixed live animal prices were $1.60-$2.38 per lb..

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 960 sheep and 631 lambs sold Jan. 8.

Beaver Hill Auctions at Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,002 sheep and 411 goats sold Jan. 8.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $270-$330 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $285-$335, 70-85 lb. were $252-$297, 86-105 lb. were $225-$266, and 106 lb. and heavier were $105-$240. Wool rams were $140-$198 per cwt. Cull ewes were $110-$203.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $250-$290, 55-69 lb. were $270-$315, 70-85 lb. were $250-$280, 86-105 lb. were $200-$252 and 106 lb. and heavier were $200-$221. Hair rams were $135-$185 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$190.
