Alberta has signed an agreement with China to help expand its commercial livestock industry.
The beef technical agreement is intended to assist the Chinese in expanding its commercial livestock industry and provide Alberta companies and beef producers with better access to the Chinese market, said a government news release.
The agreement was signed in Beijing by premier Ralph Klein and agriculture minister Ed Stelmach on a trade mission to Asia.
China is expected to increase its beef production 150 percent to 10 million tonnes by 2000, worth $1 billion.
Benefit down the road
This agreement of co-operation will also help Alberta companies develop long-term business
relationships.
“This document strengthens Alberta’s commitment to assist in the development of China’s beef industry through training, the use of technology and shipments of live cattle and embryos,” said Klein.
About 70 businesses are on the Asia trade mission.
