Canadian Financial Close: Loonie steady, crude oil falls

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar was virtually unchanged on Monday, remaining above the 73 United States cent mark.

The loonie closed at US$0.7303 or US$1=C$1.3693, compared to US$0.7302 or US$1=C$1.3695 on Friday. The U.S. Dollar Index was down 0.54 of a point at 105.62.

Crude oil prices took a dip on Monday after the Red Cross confirmed that Hamas released two Israeli hostages earlier today. Brent crude oil lost US$1.80 at US$90.36 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell US$2.10 to US$85.98/barrel.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index shed 68.90 points to 19,046.74.

Gold dropped US$11.20 at US$1,983.20 per ounce.
