New members join Cereals Canada

The Saskatchewan Barley Development Commission and AgroHall, an independent cereals trading company, are joining Cereals Canada.

The organization said it welcomes new industry and grower representation to its membership.

Cereals Canada also announced that Jason Lenz, vice-chair of the Alberta Wheat Commission, will replace Todd Hames of the AWC on the board of directors.

Human resource council has new chair

Peggy Brekveld of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture is the new chair of the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council.

The executive committee will now comprise Brekveld, vice-chair Stefan Larrass of Flowers Canada Growers, treasurer Cyr Couturier of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Association, Brenna Mahoney of Keystone Agricultural Producers and Connie Kehler of the Canadian Herb, Specialty Agriculture & Natural Health Products Coalition.

Brekveld, a northern Ontario dairy farmer who has been a CAHRC board member since 2021, is also president of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and a member of the Agricultural Adaptation Council Board.

She and husband Gert own and operate Woodstar Farm, a 75-cow dairy operation in Murillo.

Sask. veterinarians receive awards

Three Saskatchewan veterinarians recently received awards from the Canadian Veterinary Association.

Dr. John Campbell was awarded the 2023 association Merck Veterinary Award for his decades of work with cattle, particularly beef cattle production medicine and disease surveillance in beef cattle.

Campbell, who writes a regular column for The Western Producer, has worked as a clinical faculty member on the Ruminant Field Service Practice at the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine since 1991.

He served as department head of large animal clinical sciences at the WCVM from 2011-17. His primary research interests include beef cattle production medicine and disease surveillance in beef cattle.

He is currently director of the college’s Disease Investigation Unit and is an associate editor of the Veterinary Evidence journal.

Dr. Jordan Woodsworth has been awarded the Humane Award for her dedication to animal welfare in Canada.

She is a general veterinary practitioner and program lead for the WCVM’s Northern Engagement and Community Outreach Program.

Woodsworth joined the college staff in 2012 to start the Wellness, Remote Service Learning and NECO programs.

She has been part of the Canadian Collective for Equity in Veterinary Medicine for the past year and has played a key role in the development of terms of reference. She is also chair of the WCVM Committee on Indigenous Engagement.

Dr. Barbara Ambros of Saskatoon was awarded the association’s Small Animal Practitioner Award.

She is a professor of veterinary anesthesia at the WCVM and has a special interest in small mammal anesthesia and pain management.
