CAPI receives sustainability funding
The Canadian Agri-Food Foundation is a recipient of RBC Foundation funding through RBC Tech for Nature.
Partial funding will support CAPI’s environmental sustainability initiative, Spearheading Sustainable Solutions, over the next two years.
It aims to advance policy solutions that support the sector’s ongoing improvements to its sustainability.
The Spearheading Sustainable Solutions initiative includes CAPI’s doctoral and distinguished fellowship programs and a project tackling agriculture and land use resiliency that balances environmental goals with food security.

Scholarship awarded to Ont. 4-H member
RoseLynn Metzger of the Waterloo 4-H Association is the recipient of the inaugural David Perrin Memorial Award and accompanying $1,500 scholarship.
The award was established by the Perrin family in honour of David Perrin’s passion for agriculture.
Metzger is entering her final year of a bachelor of science in agriculture-animal science degree at the University of Guelph.
She joined 4-H in 2011 and was a youth leader in the Waterloo 4-H Association senior dairy club.
Each year, two scholarships in the amount of $1,500 will be awarded under the David Perrin Memorial Award to individuals pursuing post-secondary studies with an interest in agriculture and farm safety.
Applications are expected to re-open in spring 2023.
Organizations reach name deal
FMC Corp. and Farm Management Canada jointly acknowledge that FMC Corp. is the owner of the registered trademark FMC.
FMC Corp. is an agricultural sciences company that produces crop protection technologies such as Authority brand herbicides, Aim, EC herbicide, Express brand herbicides and Coragen brand insecticides.
Farm Management Canada’s name won’t be shortened in organizational material to FMC in the future except when coupled with GAC (representing the French translation of Farm Management Canada to Gestion agricole du Canada).
Pesticide, medication collection resumes
Cleanfarms is again offering collection of unwanted pesticides and old livestock/equine medication this fall.
Since its launch in 1998, the program has collected and disposed about three million kilograms of unwanted pesticides and outdated medications.
2022 collection events include:
- Alberta-North: Oct. 3-7
- Alberta and British Columbia Peace Region: Oct. 12-20
- Newfoundland and Labrador: Oct. 18-21
- Manitoba: Oct. 24-28

Ontario selects OYF nominee
David and Jennifer VanDeVelde from Wholesome Pickins Market and Bakery located at Delhi were named Ontario’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2022.
The University of Guelph graduates returned to the family tobacco farm in 2006 and expanded into growing strawberries.
Their business has seen many changes including the creation of Wholesome Pickins, which produces over 200 acres of crops including strawberries, asparagus, raspberries, pumpkins, rhubarb, tobacco and a variety of field and cover crops.
Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers for 2022 will be chosen at the National event in Saskatoon Nov. 23-27.
