Sask. ag scholarships announced

The federal and Saskatchewan governments presented four agriculture scholarships to students from across the province.

The program is aimed at encouraging young leaders to pursue their studies and embark on careers in agriculture.

Emily Sebastian of Montmartre was awarded $4,000 toward her post-secondary studies as the grand-prize winner of the 2022 Agriculture Student Scholarship.

Her video submission discussed the various ways that farmers and ranchers can effectively communicate with consumers in a transparent and honest manner.

Kristie Pedersen from Lockwood, Grace Waldenberger from Marquis and Kate Axten from Minton were all awarded $2,000 as runners up for the scholarship.

Feds fund apple research

The federal government is giving about $560,000 to the Institut de Recherche et de Développement en Agroenvironnement Inc. (IRDA) to develop a new system of precision fruit tree farming, which is aimed at solving labour shortages and pesticide use.

The project will take place in Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville, Que., at the experimental orchard at Parc National du Mont-Saint-Bruno.

IRDA is using the funds to pilot and test a system that uses exclusion netting, narrow fruiting walls and mechanized operations.

Youth leadership applicants sought

Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan is accepting new applicants until July 31 for the Youth Leadership and Mentorship Program, sponsored by Farm Credit Canada.

YLMP is open for young producers between the ages of 18 and 40.
