Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was unavailable May 27 and May 20.

U.S. hogs averaged $113.21 on a carcass basis May 27, up from $112.97 May 20.

The U.S. pork cutout was $106.16 per hundredweight May 27, down from $107.11 May 20.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to May 28 was 2.351 million, up from 2.414 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.378 million last year at the same time.

In Canada, the May 28 Signature Four price was C$227.31 per 100 kilograms, down from $227.31.

Bond market seen as crop price threat

A grain market analyst believes the bond market is about to collapse and that could drive down commodity values.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $232.83, up from $225.31, HyLife was up to $248.83 from $241.61 the previous week and OlyWest was $234.30, down from $234.50. OlyWest 2021 was up to $235.50 from $235.10, and HyLife’s adjusted price was up to $248.83 from $241.61.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.25 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.25 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,042 sheep sold May 23.
