I am proud to introduce myself as the newest intern at The Western Producer, where I will work until August.
I am 21 years old and plan to pursue a career in either agricultural or sports journalism after finishing my post-secondary education.
Currently, I am a journalism student at the University of Regina, entering my fourth and final year of school before earning my bachelor’s degree.
Before moving to the city for school, I was raised on our family grain farm south of Glenavon, a village about an hour southeast of Regina. My agricultural roots made The Western Producer an ideal fit for my internship.

Worrisome drop in grain prices
Prices had been softening for most of the previous month, but heading into the Labour Day long weekend, the price drops were startling.
My passion for farming started when I was very young. There were countless nights spent sleeping in the combine or tractor as a child, always needing to be around the action, whether in the shop or in the field.
By the time I turned 15, I was fully involved in our operation, missing school during seeding and harvest to help wherever I could.
I’m the oldest of three siblings so I had many responsibilities. I quickly became the operator of the same equipment I slept in as a child.
My other childhood passion was athletics, including hockey, football, basketball and golf. My hometown hockey rink became my second home and I spent more and more time there as I grew older. Sports became my true passion.
That’s what led me to journalism. My plan was to become a sports journalist, go to an Oilers game and discuss how terrible they played the next day (proud Jets fan here).
The farm, however, is inescapable and I find myself crawling out of the city whenever I can to get back to where I call home. One thing is certain, I won’t be moving too far from here anytime soon.
There is, however, an aspect of journalism I am equally passionate about that’s not hockey or farming — people.
The best part of journalism isn’t the topic but rather the people I meet and their unique experiences. The Western Producer has provided me a great opportunity and platform to introduce myself to so many new characters and share their stories, and I can’t wait to get started.
