The holiday marks the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and Putin repeated claims that the invasion repelled attempted aggression by Ukraine. There is fear by international observers that the day will mark a renewed offensive by Russia in Ukraine. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Sunday, meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, assisting in the re-opening of the Canadian Embassy in the city and accusing Putin of “heinous war crimes”.
