Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was not available April 8. It was $80.04 April 1.

U.S. hogs averaged $97.73 on a carcass basis April 8, down from $100.87 April 1.

The U.S. pork cutout was $103.16 per hundredweight April 8, down from $103.60 April 1.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to April 9 was 2.430 million, down from 2.434 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.454 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the April 9 Signature Four price was C$223.52 per 100 kilograms, down from $226.20.

Crop estimates show mixed results

Model-based estimates used by Statistics Canada showed the 2025/26 crop year has seen increases in canola, corn for grain, oats and lentils production while seeing dips in spring wheat, durum wheat, soybeans and barley in comparison to 2024/25.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $221.52, down from $224.20, HyLife was $236.33, down from $240.53, and OlyWest was $230.20, down from $231.40. OlyWest 2021 was $233.30, down from $234.10, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $236.33, down from $240.53.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,699 sheep and 182 goats sold April 4. Goats and lambs sold on a stronger market. Sheep sold steady.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 936 sheep and 437 goats sold March 28.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $275-$345 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $290-$375, 70-85 lb. were $300-$370, 86-105 lb. were $275-$335 and 106 lb. and heavier were $265-$312. Wool rams were $120-$225 per cwt. Cull ewes were $107-$210.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $190-$260 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $230-$330, 70-85 lb. were $250-$330, 86-105 lb. were $250-$310 and 106 lb. and heavier were $230-$270. Hair rams were $120-$220 per cwt. Cull ewes were $120-$225.
