Sponsor named for mentorship program

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has announced Elanco Animal Health Canada Limited as a gold sponsor of the Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Mentorship Program.

Through this partnership, funds will be used to offer young people ages 18-35 training, networking, and travel opportunities in the beef industry.

Elanco will bring skills and tools to the mentorship program, allowing participants additional opportunities to strengthen their animal health and husbandry knowledge.

Feds fund Ag in the Classroom

The federal government has announced up to $415,000 in support for Agriculture in the Classroom Canada as part of Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month celebrated each March.

AITC-C will receive up to $55,000 through the new federal AgriCommunication program to support activities related to the Great Canadian Farm Tours, which included 11 virtual field trips in March.

The national not-for-profit organization will also receive about $360,000 under the AgriDiversity program to expand its ThinkAG initiative, which is designed to help students learn about career opportunities in agriculture.

Conservation projects approved

The Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corp. board of directors has approved $2.86 million in new grants to 20 projects delivered by 14 Manitoba conservation groups.

The funding will provide opportunities to improve wildlife, water and soil conservation across the province.

The $2.86 million in trust funds is being matched by $6.6 million in funds and services by the successful groups, which will result in $9.5 million of conservation activity in Manitoba.

Two Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association Conservation Trust Projects were among them:

  • Addressing watershed priorities for producers and wildlife habitat (phase three) was approved in the Soil Health Category for $200,000 Conservation Trust funding over two years.
  • A new approach to restoring profitability, wildlife habitat and soil health was also approved for the third year of the project under the Habitat Wildlife Category.

Alta. vet association has new president

Dr. Daren Mandrusiak has been appointed president of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association for 2022.

He graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon and is a partner at Harvest Pointe Animal Hospital in Edmonton.

Mandrusiak is focused on exotic animal medicine, specifically avian, reptile and amphibian medicine. He has a particular interest in exotic animal surgery.

Malt barley promotion receives funding

The federal government is investing more than $960,000 for the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre to expand existing and develop new markets for Canadian barley and barley products.

The funding will be marked for marketing in major export markets and prospective countries.

It will also provide technical services to optimize the quality and performance of Canadian barley, as well as education and training to help customers gain acceptance of the unique qualities and special processing attributes of new malting barley varieties.
