Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $56.76 Jan. 28. It was unavailable Jan. 21.

U.S. hogs averaged $75.11 on a carcass basis Jan. 28, up from $62.69 Jan. 21.

The U.S. pork cutout was $96.39 per hundredweight Jan. 28, up from $93.29 Jan. 21.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Jan. 29 was 2.546 million, up from 2.440 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.660 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Jan. 29 Signature Four price was C$181.42 per 100 kilograms, up from $174.26.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $179.42, up from $172.26, HyLife was $193.78, up from $186.66, and OlyWest was $174.90, up from $170.30. OlyWest 2021 was $192.50, up from $172.25, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $204.53, up from $195.46.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls and $3.75-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.60-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 604 sheep and 60 goats sold Jan 24. Sheep and goats sold steady. Lambs sold stronger.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,542 sheep and 383 goats sold Jan. 24.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $340-$415 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $330-$420, 70-85 lb. were $315-$400, 86-105 lb. were $285-$345 and 106 lb. and heavier were $255-$322. Wool rams were $130-$175 per cwt. Cull ewes were $150-$235.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $280-$375 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $290-$395, 70-85 lb. were $290-$360, 86-105 lb. were $267-$312 and 106 lb. and heavier were $267-$280. Hair rams were $175-$205 per cwt. Cull ewes were $180-$245.
