Hogs

The U.S. national live price average for barrows and gilts was $51.59 Dec. 10, up from $45.96 Dec. 3.

U.S. hogs averaged $57.69 on a carcass basis Dec. 10, down from $61.80 Dec. 3.

The U.S. pork cutout was $86.19 per hundredweight Dec. 10, up from $81.37 Dec. 3.

The estimated U.S. weekly slaughter to Dec. 11 was 2.601 million, down from 2.657 million the previous week.

Slaughter was 2.755 last year at the same time.

In Canada, the Dec. 11 Signature Four price was C$165.62 per 100 kilograms, down from $166.27.

USDA’s August corn yield estimates are bearish

The yield estimates for wheat and soybeans were neutral to bullish, but these were largely a sideshow when compared with corn.

The Hams Marketing cash price was $163.62, down from $164.27, HyLife was $176.72, up from $176.43, and OlyWest was $162.60, up from $161.80. OlyWest 2021 was $182, up from $181.70, and HyLife’s adjusted price was $184.97, up from $184.88.

Bison

Prices offered by Canadian buyers for slaughter in Canada start at $4-$4.15 per pound hot hanging weight for Grade A bison bulls ands $3.90-$4.15 for heifers on very light trading. Canadian buyers are offering $4.60-$4.80 for prime bulls and $4.40-$4.70 for heifers for slaughter in the United States.

U.S. buyers are paying US$3.85-$4 per lb. hot hanging weight for prime bulls from Canada for U.S. slaughter, where slaughter times are booked. Heifers are being purchased at $3.60-$3.80. Returns to producers are dependent on exchange rates, quality, transportation and export costs.

Lambs

Ontario Stockyards Inc. reported that 1,703 sheep sold Dec 6.

Beaver Hill Auction in Tofield, Alta., reported that 1,202 sheep and 224 goats sold Dec. 6.

Wool lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $310-$380 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $320-$375, 70-85 lb. were $285-$360, 86-105 lb. were $230-$320 and 106 lb. and heavier were $240-$255. Wool rams were $162-$234 per cwt. Cull ewes were $140-$210.

Hair lambs lighter than 54 lb. were $240-$325 per cwt., 55-69 lb. were $280-$359, 70-85 lb. were $250-$350, 86-105 lb. were $230-$295 and 106 lb. and heavier were $220-$240. Hair rams were $150-$210 per cwt. Cull ewes were $150-$180.
